Brazilian Wax Prep Checklist

Preparation decides how the appointment feels more than almost anything the aesthetician does in the room. This is the 72-hour checklist.

72 hours before

  • Grow to ¼–½ inch. About two to three weeks of growth for most people. If you are unsure, go slightly longer — the wax can trim down, but it cannot grip what is not there.
  • Skip retinoids and acids. Retinol, tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs, and any exfoliating acid thin the top layer of skin and make it bruise more easily. Stop 48–72 hours ahead.
  • No self-tanner, no fresh tan. Fresh pigment and wax do not mix; surface color lifts with the wax.
  • Book away from your period if you are sensitive. The days just before and during are typically the most tender.

24 hours before

  • Exfoliate — the day before, not the day of. A gentle scrub or dry brush the evening prior lifts dead skin so the wax can grip hair cleanly. Exfoliating morning-of leaves skin reactive.
  • Moisturize that night, then stop. Lotion, oils, and deodorant on the day of the appointment reduce grip.
  • Wear loose clothing. Cotton or relaxed fit. Tight waistbands rub freshly opened follicles afterward.

Day of

  • Clean skin, no product. Shower beforehand; arrive without lotion, oil, or perfume on the area.
  • Eat something. First-timers sometimes feel lightheaded on an empty stomach.
  • Expect short, sharp pulls, not sustained burning. The sensation of hard wax is brief by design. Say so if anything feels wrong — a good studio adjusts temperature or technique rather than pushing through.

After you leave

The first 48 hours set the tone for how the skin recovers — tight clothing, pools, and heavy workouts wait. Our aftercare guide covers the full window, and hard wax vs soft wax explains why the method above works.
